This is an in-person, 8-week weekly course designed to develop the qualities of compassion, empathy, and love for oneself and for others. Scientific research shows that our brains are not built to endure chronic stress, but they are designed for change through neuroplasticity, which allows learning at any age throughout life. On average, we spend 70% of our day in stress mode, operating on “autopilot.”
Over the 8 weeks, we train new ways of thinking, processing information more coherently in the brain, exploring our aspirations, developing healthier habits, and cultivating specific skills in how we relate to ourselves and to others.
This course, also offered at the Faculties of Psychology and Social Work at Complutense University of Madrid, has been evaluated in laboratories and supported by strong scientific evidence showing improvements in people’s quality of life. Compassion is instinctive in humans when a loved one suffers, but daily uncertainty and life experiences can sometimes limit its expression toward others. Mindfulness and compassion go hand in hand, but they extend beyond mere concern, pity, or sympathy for others.
The program is designed to train the qualities of compassion to foster positive changes that help participants enjoy life more fully and improve interpersonal relationships, increase self-care, and gradually expand the circle of compassion to all sentient beings on the planet. It integrates traditional contemplative practices with contemporary psychology and scientific research on compassion and mindfulness. The program was developed by a team led by Geshe Thupten Jinpa, Tibetan scholar and principal translator of the Dalai Lama, alongside contemplative scholars, clinical psychologists, and interdisciplinary researchers.
Mindfulness and the cultivation of compassion give rise to courage and calm, allowing us to be fully present with serenity, clarity, and understanding, acting as resilient individuals and preventing empathic distress.
Learn and practice new tools to improve our own quality of life and that of those around us.
Develop inner strength and creativity to face life’s challenges, and the courage to act with healthy empathy.
Reduce reactivity and isolation.
Promote a constructive way of “being” in life.
Build psychological resources to cope with daily difficulties, cultivate the firmness to accept things as they are, and overcome everyday challenges.
The program consists of six stages covered in 8 sessions:
Session 1: Settling the mind and focusing on mindfulness.
Session 2: Compassion toward a loved one.
Session 3: Self-compassion.
Session 4: Kindness toward oneself.
Session 5: Shared humanity and appreciation for others.
Session 6: Expanding the circle of compassion.
Session 7: Active compassion.
Session 8: Integrated practice of mindfulness and the cultivation of compassion.
In-person classes last 2 hours and 30 minutes and include an introduction to the session, guided meditations, teaching, and spaces to share experiences related to the practices and theory.
Meditation: Mindfulness practices and visualization exercises, breathing techniques, and meditations designed to develop understanding, empathy, flexibility, resilience, and acceptance.
Practical exercises and mindful movements related to the content of each session, used as a way to train deep listening and mindful speaking.
Informal, concrete practices for application in daily life.
Enrollment in the course implies a commitment by participants to regularly carry out the recommended weekly practices. The beneficial changes generated by the course depend largely on the participant’s personal engagement and consistent practice.
Course dates: From Tuesday, January 27, 2026, to Tuesday, March 17, 2026 (Tuesdays, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.)
